Figure and Portrait. Helmut Heinze on his 80th Birthday

For years, sculptural works by Helmut Heinze have belonged to the holdings of the Skulpturensammlung (Sculpture Collection) – among them are early acquisitions from the 1970s just as a donation from a private collector on the occasion of the reopening of the Albertinum in 2010.

The 80th birthday of the artist, who is mostly known for being a sculptor, is a fantastic occasion to present his sculptural work alongside selected drawings from the artist’s possession in a small special exhibition. In both genres, the distinct essence of his art becomes clear: Helmut Heinze is a master of the portrait and, here especially, of small to medium-sized statues. These two are not only major tasks of figurative sculpture, but the artist has always devoted himself to such. Sometimes, both forms coincide in one artwork.

In the exhibition, the portrait statuette “Bernhard Kretzschmar” (1972/73) is on view just as the portrait of his friend, the actor Friedrich Wilhelm Junge (1976). Heinze’s drawings convey the artist’s clear view on basic cubic forms, on the construction of the human body in space and its sensitive apprehension.
