Johannes Wald: In the shade of absence

It is the 10th time that the association Ernst-Rietschel-Kulturring e.V. awards an art price for sculpture. The award with prize money of 15,000 EUR is donated by the Antonius youth and culture foundation. A jury, in which a representative of the Dresden Skulpturensammlung is one of the judges, decides on the winner of the Ernst-Rietschel art award. Based on this tradition, prize is not awarded in Pulsnitz - the birth place of Rietschel and home of the Kulturring – but in the Albertinum in Dresden for the first time this year. Together with the award ceremony on 9 March, 2013, the Skulpturensammlung opens an exhibition with works by the award winner Johannes Wald (*1980).

His conceptual works are reflections on basic themes of sculpture. For instance, he presents sprueses that result as waste in the creation of bronze sculptures. Visualizing the invisible is of special importance here. Johannes Wald combines two works for his exhibition in the Albertinum. “Pedestal for a Muse“ seizes the myth of the muses as sources of the artist’s inspiration and thus relates to the ancient works of the Skulpturensammlung. However, the muse in the artist’s work is absent. Only her empty sleeping area remains. Her bed functions as a substitution for a sculpture that possibly rests inside the undressed rock on the opposite side, but without the muse the sculpture cannot be created. The hope for her fast return is expressed in a poetic text that can be read as a tribute to the muse’s temper.
